The Story Behind The Shop
This was not ever on my list of things to do, not a dream or a goal, but I’ve always loved vintage furniture, antiques, and things that were a little different or that needed a little attention. Whether it was refinishing, repainting, gluing, or reupholstering, I could see the potential a piece had. I started refinishing pieces because that’s what I could afford and new things didn’t appeal to me.
When chalk style paints first came on the market several years ago, I started painting some of my vintage pieces and my friends and family commented on them, asking if I had thought about painting for other people. At that point I was just doing it for myself, but I started selling a few pieces, and then I started finding pieces and painting and selling them.
My husband suggested I look for a retail space, which scared me to death! But I started looking. I didn’t really have a plan, but my vision originally was always vintage, local, and somehow including moms in the business because moms have so much creativity but a small amount of time. We opened our doors in 2014 and we’re still operating with those three things in place.
In 2017, we began to outgrow our original location on E. North Street and moved to our current space on Laurens Road, allowing us to make room for new vendors and offer workshops and events in our on-site classroom.
When asked what my favorite thing about running Cottage Grove is, I always come back to the people. The sense of community from repeat customers, new customers, and new connections is hands down the best thing. We hope you'll join us!
